Hi Mike

Hmmm...yes Facebook does act like AOL at times but I'm inclined not to underestimate them.

They know that dominance is fleeting so it pays to watch their moves towards being open. They need to take steps. Let's see how real they are.

I thought Social links passed Google as the dominate driver to the web a while back. Im mildly shocked that Facebook would be Google because the networks wants to stay in its own system so badly. Every move the network makes is an attempt to close users off from the web as a whole. It feels like twitter is a more natural driver.

Hi Mark

I don't disagree that Facebook isn't perfect...nor necessarily the future. Closed is a problem certainly.

I'm saying that from a mass market perspective, social is now the metaphor for Internet usage. A priority that is now substantiated by facts.

I'm tied to social not Facebook and when tools evolve and my own URL can become the aggregating filter of all feeds...I'm there in a heartbeat. But for today, my 400 friends on Facebook, representing a lifetime of friendship, connections and interconnections are a great filter for information that I don't have anywhere else.

And further, this is shot that says to both Google and Facebook that the masses will go where they find value..and if they don't they will move on. So yes, today within Facebook, social and community search best become a reality.

As always, thnx for the comments. At essence we agree. I'm a pragmatist that this will evolve and I'm for riding the wave and enjoying and learning as we move towards shore.

Well thought, I believe many of us saw social numbers and link sharing converging and then surpassing organic search. Certainly my blog has seen 95%+ social visitors versus search.

But I believe the webs future isn't inside our Facebook portals, but is a web living social interface. Although I connect with some friends on Facebook for the greater part the content generated there doesn't appeal to me and I can't help shake the feeling that I'm locked inside of another social network that owns all my connections and friend knowledge. Ultimately Facebook can "kick" you out of your own social hub there if you break their rules. That's a system I'm not comfortable supporting. The individual and their own social network should reside beyond the control of corporations. Companies should strive to provide utility to earn user trust and information, not lock users in by "holding" their friends data hostage The facebook interface is quite messy compared to other open social standards.

Even our favorite commenting aggregator Disqus has issues. Modifcations of the Salmon protocol can help distibute and make comment connectivity more "web like".
